Midcentury modern homes are popular in Phoenix, and this new listing tops them all.
Designed by local architect Ralph Haver and built in 1951, the 2,259-square-foot home has had only two owners. Soon it will have a third: The listing is pending sale.
Architect Harry Youngkin was the first owner, and he restored it in the 1960s and 1970s, adding a primary suite with large closets and a bonus room. The current homeowner picked up this property in 2006.
“It’s a design that looks seamless. You can’t tell where the addition began,” says Scott Jarson of AZ Architecture, who listed the home for $975,000 in January.
“The original footprint of the home was rectangular. This made it into a horizontal L-shaped home. This is a house where you don’t have to leave home.”
Original features include vaulted rooflines, exposed beams, clerestory windows, large-format windows, and floor-to-ceiling glazing. European-style cabinetry, sandblasted block, and other design choices brought the home into the current century.
The 1951 build has had only two owners.

Haver designed many tract homes in Phoenix , says Jarson. “They’re highly revered now and very sought after” in residential enclaves the listing calls “Haver-hoods.”
This home also stands out for its landscaping. The sellers are landscape architects, and they retained the original flood irrigation, which helps water trees at a low cost.
“The next owner will benefit from decades of dedicated, knowledgeable work on the landscape,” Jarson says. “The lot size in this particular subdivision is typically twice the size of midcentury homes in Phoenix.”
The home is located in a cul-de-sac in the Kensington Terrace neighborhood, which basks in views of the mountain. Downtown Phoenix is just 10 minutes away.
