Actor Donald Sutherland was California dreamin’ when he drafted the plans for this oceanfront townhome in Santa Monica.
The Hollywood icon designed and built the home in 1980 and lived there for over 30 years. Now, the seaside abode is on the market for $3,675,000.
The property is also available for lease, fully furnished, starting on March 31 for $12,500 per month.
Sutherland moved out of the home in 2012, but many of his original design choices remain.
“The home has unique architectural features, all designed by Sutherland,” says the current owner in a statement. “The original built-in furniture is still intact and included in the sale or lease.”
The owner, who prefers not to be named, notes that the place has “extensive security items still in place to keep the paparazzi from peering into the home.”
A beachfront home built and designed by actor Donald Sutherland recently hit the market for $3.6 million.

Steps from the beach
Located just a few feet from the sand of Santa Monica Beach, the three-bed, two-bath townhome offers unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean.
Perhaps the best views can be enjoyed in the main living space, where a vaulted ceiling and transom windows make the modest, 1,484-square-foot dwelling feel spacious.
A gas fireplace in the main living room is bookended by sliding-glass doors that lead to a patio that hovers above the Ocean Front Walk footpath. The space also features a built-in bookshelf and desk facing the seascape. Talk about an ideal work-from-home setup!

Wondrous woodwork
Sutherland was clearly inspired by traditional Craftsman design when choosing the wooden finishes for the home. Millwork can be seen throughout the interior—in the molding, wall panels, built-in furniture, and cabinetry, all done in a rich, honey-toned wood.
The kitchen is filled with Shaker-style cabinetry and matching panels on the refrigerator and dishwasher. That custom feel continues in two of the bedrooms, with built-in dressers and closets.

Deluxe details
The home is outfitted with luxurious amenities, including a dual shower and steam room in the primary suite, Thermador and Miele appliances in the kitchen, and designer lighting throughout.
While the kitchen appliances and washer and dryer have been updated, there have been no other major alterations or updates to the house, according to the current owner.
While he clearly has some design chops, Sutherland is best known for his decades-long acting career. The 88-year-old Canadian-born star first came to prominence with roles in the movies “The Dirty Dozen” and “M*A*S*H.” The Golden Globe winner went on to appear in films such as “Klute,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” and “Ordinary People.” More recently, he played President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise.
Michael Grady with The Agency holds the listing.
