It started out looking like any other house, but then creativity took over.
Now, the fanciful home in Palmer, AK, sports many castle-like features, including turrets, merlons, and crenels.
The regal real estate was listed for $649,000 in July, then quickly sold in early August. The sale price isn’t yet known.

The original owner built the place in 1985 with a cone-shaped roof on top of what’s now the six-story turret.
“The new owner, who bought it in 1994, is a welder, and he decided he wanted a castle,” says listing agent Tyler Hughes, with Alaska Realty & Investments.
He added metal siding and removed the enclosure at the top of the tower, says Hughes.
“The square footage was all there, and he finished the exterior to resemble the castle look,” Hughes says.
The owner is an engineer with an artistic side, Hughes continues. “He likes to have fun. It’s the other side of his brain playing when he put together this house for his whole family to enjoy.”

The exterior looks like a castle, but the 4,149-square-foot interior space appears more conventional.

“It doesn’t reflect the castle from the inside,” Hughes says. “People are wanting to see stonework and all kind of stuff, which is going to take more time and money. I kind of hope someone does that.”

The five-bedroom home includes a 675-square-foot studio apartment on the third floor.
“It has a full kitchen and mountain views to the north,” Hughes says. The home is near a new ski area and across the street from a winter skating pond.
The six-story turret features an open deck, says Hughes.
“The view from the very top is 360. You can spin around, and you’ve got just incredible views over the tree line. In the wintertime, even just from the second floor, the views toward the south are incredible,” he says.
With two kitchens, the home would need just a little bit of work to be a great short-term rental, he adds.
“You’ve got a castle there—you could make a little village of tiny homes,” Hughes says.
