The chance to live on Sherman Oaks‘ legendary Oakfield Drive doesn’t come along every day. That’s the site of 17 iconic homes designed by world-renowned midcentury modern architect Richard Neutra.
Known as platform houses, the buildings are set on massive platforms and cantilever over a Los Angeles hillside supported by lithesome stilts.
And now, the opportunity to own the most luxurious platform house of them all is here.
This exquisitely updated two-bedroom, two-bath home is listed for $2,050,000.
“From the street below, this house looks like a sleek floating vessel in the sky,” says listing agent Michelle Schwartz, of The Agency.
Anyone driving between L.A.’s West Side and the San Fernando Valley via the Beverly Glen canyon can’t help but notice, and marvel, at the wondrous abodes hovering off a steep slope.

Spectacular spec homes
All 17 of the houses were designed in the early 1960s by Neutra for the Stone-Fisher development company as a spec housing development.
But Neutra and the Stone-Fisher folks didn’t see eye to eye on some things. So the architect withdrew, leaving another skilled designer, William S. Beckett, to finish the designs and oversee construction.
As for the gem that’s come on the market, it’s been updated with custom touches over the years by its current homeowner, architect Donald M. Goldstein.
Luxe living
While Neutra’s distinctive style is still evident, Goldstein has elevated the space with high-end, modern finishes and upgrades. The look is noticeable from the street, where Goldstein created a custom cut-and-fit privacy wall.

The owner also added custom-built, wrought-iron front doors. Step inside and take in the views from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Goldstein also raised the roof and installed four custom-designed pyramid skylights. The added light brightens spaces like the dining area and the primary suite, and it opens up the 1,800-square-foot floor plan.

Goldstein also added a kitchen with Wolf appliances, a Lutron smart home system, and solar panels. There’s a glassed-in, 300-bottle wine room and an adjacent dining room, which can seat at least 10.

The thoughtful updates also include a courtyard with a water feature and a koi pond, which is a welcome outdoor space on a property that has no back or front yards and no decks or balconies. There is a carport with space for one vehicle.
Sleek but solid
Now to put any fears to rest about the house tumbling down the hillside: Structurally reinforced pillars support the home’s platform. It meets all the standards of L.A.’s outrageously strict building codes. And the property has withstood all major earthquakes since 1965, when the home was completed.
The platform house is supported by structurally sound pillars.

If the words “acrophobia” and “vertigo” have no place in your vocabulary, this one-of-a-kind dwelling might be just the place for you.
