A 1951 home<\/a> in West Hartford, CT<\/a>, is popular for a very particular reason: There just aren\u2019t a lot of houses like it nearby.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not common at all in our area,\u201d says listing agent Deb Cohen<\/strong>, of Coldwell Banker Realty<\/a>. \u201cFor the people who are midcentury aficionados, there is just very little out there, few and far between.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cohen says the majority of historic West Hartford homes are Tudors<\/a> and Colonial Revivals<\/a> built during the 1920s and 1930s. That means an atomic-era gem truly stands out.<\/p>\n

Listed for $699,900, the 2,735-square-foot home has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It sits on more than an acre\u2014also a rarity for West Hartford, where lot sizes are typically smaller, Cohen notes.<\/p>\n

The home was designed by Robert Carroll May<\/strong>, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright<\/strong>. May\u2019s residential projects appear throughout Connecticut and New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis one, with the pedigree it has, excited a lot of people,\u201d Cohen says. \u201cI heard from people who aren\u2019t even house hunting but saw this house. I had phone calls from Hong Kong and California, and one person drove up from New York City the same day. I still have people reaching out to me, wanting to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The seller bought the house 13 years ago. Since its construction, not much has been altered. A fireplace, built-ins, and the vaulted ceiling in the living room are among the home\u2019s many preserved features. The baths are original, too.<\/p>\n

Boasting a sleek design, the original kitchen has Miele appliances.<\/p>\n

May used redwood, white oak, slate brick, and copper to design the home, relying upon walls of windows to coax in natural light. An open layout in the dining area and living room is bridged by a copper-hooded fireplace.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the finished basement can function as a rec room or home office.<\/p>\n

Richard Kelly<\/strong>, who worked on the Philip Johnson<\/strong>-designed Glass House in New Canaan, CT<\/a>, and the Seagram Building in Manhattan, designed the home\u2019s lighting.<\/p>\n

Cohen says the home still looks like it did the day it was built.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther than newer appliances in the kitchen, it\u2019s really pretty original and all in excellent condition,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

The residence was designed for Hartford native Marcus Bassevitch<\/strong> and his wife, Bluma<\/strong>. Bassevitch was president and treasurer of Standard Structural Steel Company in Hartford.<\/p>\n

The listing includes a two-car garage, and the yard is fully fenced with a covered, rear porch that\u2019s ideal for entertaining. Eisenhower Park sits just behind the home and is accessible through the gate. That means there\u2019s no threat of development that might compromise the views.<\/p>\n
