Folks are heading South\u2014and not just for the winter.<\/p>\n

More people moved<\/a> to the South in 2023\u2014especially Florida<\/a> and Texas\u2014according to a recent report<\/a> from the U.S. Census Bureau. The region is known for offering more affordably priced homes, a lower cost of living, and warmer winters. Meanwhile, New York City and pricey parts of California experienced the largest population losses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rate of which people are coming in [to Florida] has slowed,\u201d says Brad O\u2019Connor<\/strong>, chief economist of the Florida Realtors\u00ae, noting that migration to the state peaked during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re still a hot spot,\u201d he adds, pointing out that people are gravitating toward Florida\u2019s suburbs. \u201cWe still have really robust growth coming from the Northeast and the West Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n

About 60% of U.S. counties experienced an increase in population in 2023, according to the report. Typically, more populated counties gained even more residents while smaller ones saw decreases.<\/p>\n

Florida, in particular, saw strong growth<\/a>. About 96% of the state\u2019s counties grew, while just three lost residents from 2022 to 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are moving for strong job growth, relatively low home prices compared to those in New York and California, relatively low property taxes,\u201d says Gay Cororaton<\/strong>, chief economist of the Miami Association of Realtors\u00ae. \u201cAnd Florida has an allure for retirees.\u201d<\/p>\n

While many residents are leaving Miami-Dade County, they\u2019re often staying nearby\u2014in Broward County, she explains.<\/p>\n

This also marked the first year since the pandemic that the Midwest gained more residents than the region lost. And while the cold (and pricey) Northeast lost more residents than gained new ones, the loss abated.<\/p>\n

Below are the counties with the highest levels of net domestic migration in 2023.<\/p>\n
