Those who hate bedbugs, aka\u00a0everyone<\/em>, might want to be careful in the Windy City.<\/p>\n

For the fourth year in a row, Chicago was named the worst city for bedbugs, according to a recent report<\/a> from pest control company Orkin.<\/p>\n

Chicago was followed by New York City and Philadelphia nabbing the second and third spots on the list that no city wants the honor of appearing on.<\/p>\n

The icky, little bloodsuckers<\/a> are generally about a quarter-inch long, large enough to be seen with the naked eye. They typically feed on slumbering people and animals at night.<\/p>\n

The problem for homeowners is these critters reproduce quickly. Females can deposit up to five eggs a day, and the bugs can survive several months without feeding. They can also attach themselves to bags<\/a>, such as purses and luggage left in hotel rooms, and move easily to new locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cBedbugs are extremely resilient, making them difficult to control,\u201d Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel<\/strong> said in a statement. \u201cThey are excellent at hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n

The list was based on the metropolitan areas where Orkin performed the most bedbug residential and commercial treatments from December 2022 through Nov. 30, 2023. (Metros include the main city and surrounding towns, suburbs, and smaller urban areas.)<\/p>\n

How to check your home for bedbugs<\/h2>\n

There are steps renters and homeowners can take to keep bedbugs away<\/a>. Experts recommend folks check for bedbugs in mattress tags and seams and behind baseboards and headboards.<\/p>\n

Folks should be careful before purchasing secondhand furniture, inspecting it thoroughly before bringing it inside.<\/p>\n

And travelers should make sure not to bring bedbugs home with them. They should look for small, ink-colored stains on mattress seams and in soft furniture and check the mattress, box spring, and furniture for the pests. They can even hide in torn wallpaper.<\/p>\n

Folks should also make sure to stash their luggage away from the bed and the walls of hotel rooms, such as in the bathrooms or on counters. When they return home, they can put their clothes in the dryer for 30 to 45 minutes on high to kill the creatures that might have hitched a ride.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs travel plans ramp up, it\u2019s important that Americans know how to protect themselves through pest identification and proper control,\u201d Hottel said. \u201cExamining any new items before they enter your home will help to catch a bedbug infestation sooner rather than later.\u201d<\/p>\n
