\u201cYou don\u2019t see a lot of castles in the middle of Denver\u2014and this one is really true to being a castle,\u201d says listing agent Jenny Usaj<\/strong>, with Usaj Realty.<\/p>\n

We did the due diligence and confirm this is the only castle in the Mile High City, downtown or otherwise.<\/p>\n

Built with local stone in 1886, this fortress is nearly impenetrable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe exterior of the home is 22-inch-thick lava stone,\u201d says Usaj.<\/p>\n

Local architect William Lang<\/strong> designed the home with a signature three-story turret and beautiful windows.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a place to sit and read,\u201d Usaj says of the turret. \u201cIt\u2019s incredible that they were able to build [it] with the skillsets and the machines that they had.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the original details that remain include a huge, colorful window that was a symbol of royalty and prestige in historic homes, Usaj says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis peacock window in this home is stunning. It\u2019s at least 6 feet across and has stained glass that was created in Belgium prior to World War I,\u201d she adds. \u201cPart of the way they colored the stained glass was they mixed actual gold into the glass to change the color of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The castle is fresh off a recent face-lift as well. It was listed for $1,575,000 in 2019, Usaj says. The current owners bought it just before the COVID-19 pandemic and updated the kitchens, eight bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did a ton of work,\u201d Usaj says. \u201cIt\u2019s all they did during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The castle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently classified as a residence. However, it could serve as a vacation rental, a grand single-family home, or even an events venue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the years, it has really been everything from residential to commercial to apartments,\u201d Usaj explains. \u201cIt was famous for being a bed-and-breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

The home\u2019s 21 rooms have been updated, but all retain a bit of vintage allure.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favorite feature of the property is how they really blended old-world charm with some of the more modern amenities,\u201d she says. \u201cLike remodeling the kitchen and bathrooms in a thoughtful way to accommodate our lifestyle without losing some of the unbelievable craftsmanship and woodwork throughout the home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The castle\u2019s former carriage house<\/a> is also available for sale for $1.5 million. It\u2019s built with the same lava stone as the castle and currently serves as a multifamily residence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is magical,\u201d says Usaj. \u201cIt truly just takes you back in time to a place where people were thoughtful about their craftsmanship, and it\u2019s just one of those houses you walk in and think, \u2018Oh, if these walls could talk,\u2019 because they\u2019ve seen so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
