Churches converted into houses are often a decorator\u2019s dream. But the work can be daunting.<\/p>\n

The seller of this\u00a0sacred space<\/a>\u00a0in Savannah, GA<\/a>, already started transforming it from a 1970s church into a contemporary home. The midrenovation structure is on the market for $695,000 and could be ideal for someone motivated to finish the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was going to make it a family compound and an arts studio,\u201d says listing agent Staci Donegan<\/strong>,\u00a0of Seabolt Real Estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the owner changed course and halted construction, \u201cso the next owner could do what they want,\u201d Donegan says. \u201cIt\u2019s basically a blank slate for the buyer.\u201d<\/p>\n

A new roof and HVAC system and electrical upgrades are among the completed improvements to the once-hallowed house of worship. The building sits on a 0.7-acre lot dotted with mature oak trees.<\/p>\n

Framework for four bedrooms and two baths was added, but a kitchen still needs to be installed. The church\u2019s cathedral ceiling, oak paneling, and oak pews were retained during the renovation and are included in the sale.<\/p>\n

The original social hall behind the church still needs attention, but it does have a bath. The seller\u2019s intent was to use this space as an art studio.<\/p>\n

Savannah is a coastal city with roughly 150,000 residents. The unique church is in the Thunderbolt neighborhood and offers\u00a0easy access to the downtown area, the\u00a0beaches of Tybee Island, and the Truman Parkway.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust walking the streets of Savannah is a great history lesson,\u201d Donegan says. \u201cAlong with a historic backdrop, the area offers other perks.\u00a0Our [housing] market is insulated, compared to the rest of the country. \u2026 We are still affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, the city\u2019s median listing price is $316,000, according to Realtor.com\u00ae.<\/p>\n

In 2020, the seller scooped up the church building as a foreclosure for $315,000.<\/p>\n

So, what might be the former church\u2019s next incarnation?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have had people looking at it as an entertainment venue,\u201d Donegan says. \u201cA church has looked at it. A cabinet builder wanted it to be a showroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ideally, she says, it will probably be a live-work property.<\/p>\n

\u201cI truly believe the buyers for this house will be like the seller\u2014an artist or have some sort of craft they do,\u201d Donegan predicts.<\/p>\n
