\u201cThe traditional home on Shelter Island is a shingled, 19th-century, Maine-style home,\u201d says Nick Brown<\/strong>\u00a0of Sotheby\u2019s International Realty \u2013 East Hampton Brokerage<\/a>, the listing agent for the island\u2019s second-most expensive property.<\/p>\n

Priced at $13.95 million,\u00a0this 6,006-square-foot behemoth<\/a>\u00a0is 100 miles east of Manhattan<\/a>, just off Long Island, and accessible by seaplane, helicopter, or ferry.<\/p>\n

The home known as the Snyder House<\/a> was designed by Bauhaus-trained architect Bertrand Goldberg<\/strong> in 1952 for steel magnate John Snyder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There are six bedrooms and four baths.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it was built, it was considered futuristic,\u201d Brown says.<\/p>\n

And these days, it\u2019s a rarity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s very little that remains of (Goldberg\u2019s) work, on the residential side,\u201d Brown explains.<\/p>\n

The sellers, who are the home\u2019s third owners, snapped up the place in 2000. Their two-year restoration struck an impressive balance of honoring the home\u2019s original footprint\u2014the stone floors and eight-flue fireplaces remain\u2014while adding contemporary upgrades.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey really brought the house into the 21st century,\u201d Brown says.<\/p>\n

Air conditioning, radiant floor heating, a walk-in closet in the primary bedroom, a media room, and a yoga room were added.<\/p>\n

One of the home\u2019s bedrooms has a private entrance and bath, which would be ideal for any household staff, Brown says.<\/p>\n

The kitchen\u2019s chef-grade appliances and the open dining and living areas are an entertainer\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n

The property includes a private beach and a heated saltwater pool, which was completed just a year ago.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a two-car garage and a nearly all-glass, covered porch, which brings in plenty of natural light.<\/p>\n

The home also features a rare amenity: a 235-foot, deep-water dock.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was originally designed for seaplane use,\u201d Brown says. \u201cYou could have multiple boats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Delightfully, the home\u2019s location makes it easy to cruise around the area in just about any watercraft.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can just whip across and go to Sag Harbor for dinner,\u201d Brown says.<\/p>\n

The house sits on 3.4 acres and has views of West Neck Harbor and Long Island Sound.<\/p>\n

Brown notes the property has plenty of space to expand in the future.<\/p>\n

And building up might be what\u2019s ahead for the once-sleepy, Hamptons-adjacent vacation area. According to Brown, Shelter Island is \u201ccatching up\u201d to the South Fork of Long Island, including the Hamptons.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of hotels and restaurants have been recently renovated,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The island has long been a summertime destination, but year-round residents and long-term visitors are increasingly common on the serene outpost.<\/p>\n

\u201cShelter Island is becoming very hot,\u201d Brown says. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of interest from buyers from abroad. Europeans love Shelter Island.\u201d<\/p>\n
