A colorful, postmodern mansion<\/a> with flair to spare has hit the market in Sarasota, FL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The multihued home is considered an architecturally significant structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cArchitect Don Chapell <\/strong>built the home for himself and family, and I\u2019ve never seen a home where there has been more thought, attention, and custom-planning for every detail,\u201d says Lisa Rooks Morris<\/strong>, who is co-listing the house with Amy Drake<\/strong>. Both are with Premier Sotheby\u2019s International Realty.<\/p>\n

The list price is $10 million.<\/p>\n

Chapell died six months before the house was finished, and he never got to see what many call his masterpiece. His widow completed it around 2000.<\/p>\n

The current sellers bought the home in 2005 for $3.8 million, according to Realtor.com\u00ae.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have been incredible stewards of this house, and they haven\u2019t changed any of the colors that [Chapell] originally chose,\u201d Morris explains. \u201cIt\u2019s in immaculate condition, and I don\u2019t think they\u2019ve made a single change.\u201d<\/p>\n

The home is 6,843 square feet, with high ceilings and large windows. It has six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and plenty of living space.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the outside design is far from ordinary, with its colors, stripes, and shapes.<\/p>\n

\u2018Gets your attention\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cIt really is like living in a piece of artwork\u2014like sculpture,\u201d Morris says. \u201cIt definitely gets your attention. It\u2019s a lot, but it doesn\u2019t hurt your eyes. \u2026 It\u2019s very soft and kind of inviting and sort of flows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Entering the home for the first time comes with a little surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou open what you think is the front door, and you\u2019re in this incredible courtyard,\u201d Morris says. \u201cThen you walk through the courtyard, and you enter the main living areas of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

The home is made mostly from poured concrete using custom molds\u2014which allow for the curved walls. It even has a safe room.<\/p>\n

Morris describes the home as whimsical and refined, noting that the paint selections are part of its clever design. She says the architect made choices by \u201clooking at what happens to the colors throughout the day, as the sun moves.\u201d<\/p>\n

The primary suite is upstairs, with private balconies overlooking the pool below and Pansy Bayou just beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has incredible bathroom space and closet space, and then it goes back to a private office,\u201d Morris explains, adding that there\u2019s also a main bedroom on the lower level.<\/p>\n

The other bedrooms are on the upper floor, in the opposite wing of the house from the primary bedroom. A catwalk connects the two wings.<\/p>\n

Chapell was part of the Sarasota School of Architecture, a modern-design movement with ties to the area. He bought the land for the house in 1983 but did not start building on it until many years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever buys this house will really be an architecture aficionado,\u201d Morris says. \u201cThe house sort of sings. It has a rhythm I think architecture lovers will appreciate.\u201d<\/p>\n
