But a suburban house<\/a>\u00a0in North Woodmere, NY<\/a>, listed for $3,999,000 comes with a surprise inside.<\/p>\n

The Long Island home\u2019s interiors are designed to look like an urban loft.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always dreamt of living in New York City\u2014in SoHo in one of those lofts\u2014and I wanted that lofty look. But I also wanted to live in the suburbs,\u201d explains homeowner Alyssa Reichel<\/strong>, who turned to a 1962-era home in 2003. \u201cSo we bought a tropicana ranch house that was not great. I always knew I would remodel the kitchen, because I love to cook.\u201d<\/p>\n

Industrial and colorful<\/h2>\n

A 2010 kitchen remodel turned into a whole-house renovation that took the home from sponge-painted walls to exposed ductwork and sparkly granite floors.<\/p>\n

The floors alone inspired a redesign of the six-bedroom, five-bathroom space.<\/p>\n

The designer \u201ccame into my home with one piece of granite and said, \u2018This is what I\u2019m going to build your entire house around,\u2019\u201d Reichel says. \u201cI knew he understood my vision. [The granite] has mother of pearl and really interesting colors in it. I told him I wanted that lofty, industrial warehouse type of feel\u2014but very colorful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is a colorful hybrid style. The remodel also involved adding an extra story to create a striking primary suite.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy house ended on the second floor, but I wanted a whole area just for the [primary] suite,\u201d Reichel explains. \u201cAnd I wanted like a spa kind of bathroom with a Jacuzzi.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the outside, the home has curb appeal aplenty and the backyard boasts a patio and pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt stands out when you drive down that street,\u201d says listing agent Mark Lipner<\/strong>, with Berkshire Hathaway. \u201cPeople slow down \u2026 [because] you can see from the outside, it\u2019s much nicer than the average house. Everyone\u2019s always curious to see the inside of this house. The inside is totally different from what they expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lipner and Reichel both say it\u2019s fun to watch as people open the front door and discover all the metal and granite that await.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t know where to look first,\u201d Reichel says. \u201cTheir jaws drop open. Everybody appreciates it for what it is, and they want to see more. Everybody wants a tour of this house. They just cannot get over the detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

The detail includes corrugated metal on the ceiling, exposed ductwork, and a melange of colors.<\/p>\n

Reichel is selling her passion project, because it has become too big for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still love my house, and I know once I sell it, I\u2019m going be very, very sad,\u201d she admits. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be like losing a limb. Basically, I\u2019m just trying to be practical at this point in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reichel says she hopes the buyer will keep it as is, but she\u2019s realistic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes me feel great, but I know it\u2019s very taste-specific,\u201d she\u2019s says of her custom creation.<\/p>\n
