A recently listed midcentury modern masterpiece in New Canaan, CT,<\/a> features a show-stopping design for $2.1 million.<\/p>\n

Known as the Evans House<\/a>, this five-bedroom beauty was built in 1960.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames Evans<\/strong> trained at Yale and designed this house for his own family,\u201d says listing agent John Engel<\/strong>, of Douglas Elliman.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time, he was looking to take the Glass House<\/a> concept in a new direction, so the home was an experiment with roof design.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only does the spacious home feature a unique design, but it also has a hyperbolic paraboloid, or curved, roof. (You can get more details on the design from a discussion on YouTube<\/a> by the architect, who died in 2021.)<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it is not a straight roof, it wicks away water more efficiently and gutters are not needed. It also doesn\u2019t collect water or leaves. It\u2019s very innovative and lasts longer because of its shape,\u201d Engel says.<\/p>\n

Engel and his team will be hosting a reception at the home following The Best of New Canaan\u2019s Modern Architecture Tour <\/a>to benefit the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society on Oct. 20. New Canaan is known for its midcentury modern homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The innovative design of the home includes suspension bridge technology and walls of glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have got a two-story glass wall and deck that wraps all the way around, so the interior to exterior transition is seamless, not only through the six sliding glass doors, but also windows,\u201d Engel notes.<\/p>\n

The primary bedroom is on the main floor, and four more are on the fully exposed lower level at the back of the house.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat takes a little bit to get used to,\u201d Engel says. \u201cThe ceiling is unobstructed, but that\u2019s the whole point of the design\u2014so you can see all the way from one side of the house to the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who does Engel envision to be the next buyer?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis house has had probably 10 times the number of traffic than any listing in our portfolio,\u201d he says. \u201cMost interested people are coming from either New York or L.A. I think it will end up being a secondary home for someone, but we have had people looking at it who want to add a guesthouse and pool for a primary residence.\u201d<\/p>\n
