Move-in ready, it’s not.

“Currently, there are three structures on the island and an in-ground pool. The structures definitely need to be renovated,” says listing agent Nick Letendre, with Samson Properties-Lake Ridge. Bonus: The island could be renamed.

“Whoever buys the island can just rebuild those or make a new building in the same place without much issue as far as permits and stuff like that,” he adds.

The main house, guesthouse, and caretaker’s house date to the early 1900s and are in need of an overhaul.

“It’s been vacant for 30 years, and nobody has lived there,” Letendre explains. “To be safe, we just don’t let people into the houses at this point.”

Historic photo

Nick Letendre

Aerial view

Nick Letendre

Electricity runs to the island, and there’s a well for water and a septic system for sewer.

The most exciting thing about the island, however, is its extensive history.

Once known as Scott’s Island, it is very close to Quantico and its Marine Corps base.

“From the island, you can see the president’s helicopter take off and land,” Letendre says.

The island was once inhabited by the Piscataway people, and at one time the National Geographic Society owned it.

Island

Nick Letendre

Beach

Nick Letendre

But its real claim to fame dates to 1893 to 1903, when Samuel Langley held piloted flight experiments on the island.

“The Langley Flight Foundation is trying to shed some light on Langley’s contribution to flight, and this island is where that flight occurred,” Letendre says. Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, was on the island and witnessed a test flight in 1896.

The land is a bit overgrown, but it has great views of the river, Letendre says. “It has some of the largest trees I have ever seen in my life.”

Aerial view

Nick Letendre

The only way to get to the island is by boat, and a sunken barge serves as a dock.

“It’s only about a 10- or 15-minute boat ride to Hampton’s Landing marina. If you’re going from the island to DC, it’s going to take about 20 to 30 minutes. It’s the best way to avoid traffic in the Northern Virginia area,” he says.

Letendre notes that the current owner bought the place because he is a history buff and wanted to own a piece of Americana.

“The history is really what drew me to the listing in the first place. I’d love to see that preserved,” Lentendre says. Potential buyers have talked about using the island as an event venue or a retreat.

“It’s all possible,” he says.

Beach

Nick Letendre

The post $4.7M Private Island Near DC Is Steeped in U.S. Aviation History appeared first on Real Estate News & Insights | realtor.com®.

MLS via Realtor.com A totally private island with a 30-minute commute to Washington, DC, has surfaced for sale for $4.7 million.
