Bulging at the bottom, the residence has gobbled up plenty of interest around the web.

“It’s kind of built a little bit like a hornet’s nest. The second floor is actually bigger than the bottom floor, and the top floors are a bit smaller,” explains listing agent Leslie Horne, with Leslie Horne & Associates. “It gets a lot of attention. It’s been called everything from a pineapple to a Bikini Bottomite from ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants.’ We’ve heard it all.”

The home was built in 1977 and is currently available for $650,000.

“It’s a landmark. Everybody on Lake Bowen knows where the round house is,” he says. “I don’t know who built it, but the guy who owns it now has owned it since the early 1990s. He started remodeling it, but never finished it.”

The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath house apparently hasn’t been lived in for decades. Only one bathroom is usable and one bedroom is framed.

Some of the building materials remain and will be included in the sale, but there’s a caveat.

The owner “bought the stuff years ago, and you need to keep in mind he was going to remodel it back in the ’90s, so a lot of stuff is outdated now,” Horne explains. He estimates it will probably take at least $100,000 to $150,000 to complete the interior work.

Interior

Leslie Horne

Stairs

Leslie Horne

Interior

Leslie Horne

Entry

Leslie Horne

Lot

Leslie Horne

The only square element in the home is a column that runs from the bottom to the top of the house.

“I don’t know why they designed it like that. But you can go to the basement floor and go in a little door and climb a ladder up to each floor,” he says. “I don’t know, maybe they wanted to put a little elevator in there. I don’t know what that was in there for.”

The home has three levels, and the top floor is accessible only by a ladder.

“You actually have a little hatch up there you can push open like on a ship or something. You can go up on the top of the house and walk around on a little platform up there,” Horne says. “I’ve never been up there—and I don’t plan on going.”

Pricing the house was a challenge, he says. There is nothing comparable in this area of the Palmetto State. But the 0.29-acre waterfront lot is valuable.

“The lot is nice and level. If the house wasn’t there, the lot would be worth $450,000 to $500,000,” he says. “It goes gradually down to the water with deep-water access. The lot is worth a lot.”

As for the home’s viral status, Horne says he doesn’t know what to think of it.

“It’s a hard one to explain, it really is,” he says. “You just have to look at it for yourself. I think somebody would buy it just to rent out or someone who likes unique stuff and wants something nobody else has.”

The post Bulging at the Seams: A Round Lakefront House in South Carolina Is a Local Mystery appeared first on Real Estate News & Insights | realtor.com®.

MLS / Realtor.com A rotund lakefront house in Inman, SC, appears as if it might have had too much to eat.
