A jewel of an estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Afton, VA, has hit the market for $2.5 million.

The two-bedroom, 3,628-square-foot residence sits on 5 acres of prime real estate overlooking the award-winning Veritas Winery.

Completed in 1983, the home was designed and furnished by Hugh Newell Jacobsen. The American architect worked on projects around the world and earned numerous accolades, including the National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects and 20 awards for excellence in house design from the Architectural Record.

Some of his more famous works included two Smithsonian museums in Washington, DC, and several iconic homes, including one for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis on Martha’s Vineyard. Jacobsen died in 2021 at the age of 91.

A signature style

Jacobsen designed homes with modernist clean lines and to showcase natural light.

This Blue Ridge beauty features large skylights, windows with electric blinds, and glass doors throughout, all of them framing the gorgeous mountainscape.

On the upper level, you’ll find a galley kitchen, a spacious dining room, and a living room with a travertine fireplace. The lower level boasts a studio, an indoor lap pool, and windows that open to a rear patio and outdoor kitchen.

“This home features vaulted ceilings in the living and dining room, and 12-foot ceilings everywhere else,” says the listing agent, Conor Murray of Frank Hardy Sotheby’s International Realty. “This is an ideal vacation home for a retired couple or a young couple.”

Murray explains that the home was built with practicality, joy, and community in mind.

“The eat-in galley kitchen with expansive views of the mountains and the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open from pool to patio with a beverage bar, an outdoor kitchen, and mature landscaping makes it an entertainment paradise,” he says.
