A rare opportunity to own Joseph Eichler‘s personal residence has landed on the market in Atherton, CA.
Priced at $6,385,000, the five-bedroom midcentury home has already received plenty of interest, according to listing agent Eric Boyenga.
“His residence was a collaborative effort of notable creators, most prominently the architectural firm Anshen and Allen,” says Boyenga. “Bob Anshen in particular was a devotee of Frank Lloyd Wright and played a pivotal role in designing Eichler’s residence.”
As you would expect of a home from a Wright devotee, the design perfectly models the Usonian ideals of simplicity, natural materials, and a harmonious blend with the environment. Eichler apparently lived in the home from the time of its construction in 1951 until 1965.
“They implemented an innovative open floor plan, large glass walls, triangular motifs, and indoor-outdoor living spaces,” Boyenga says.
The home’s aesthetic is probably familiar to Eichler fans.
“This design approach was groundbreaking at the time and became a signature element of Eichler homes, influencing residential architecture across America,” Boyenga says.
Eichler went on to build some 11,000 tract homes, mainly across California, from 1949-1970s, tapping architects Anshen & Allen, Claude Oakland, and A. Quincy Jones. Those midcentury modern builds have come to be known as Eichlers, after their developer. They continue to be popular, all these decades later, for their fantastic and timeless features.

Other features to appreciate in this one-of-a-kind, 3,700-square-foot house include built-in furniture, plentiful natural light, and interior post-and-beam construction.
“This architectural feature allows for fewer supporting walls, which contributes to the open, airy feeling of the interiors and a smoother transition to the outdoor spaces,” Boyenga says. “Strategically placed skylights brighten up interior spaces and reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day.”
The pricy location of this historic, brick-and-redwood-clad residence is also notable.
“Lindenwood is a prestigious and affluent neighborhood known for its luxurious homes and tranquil, tree-lined streets,” Boyenga says. “Nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, its quiet and private atmosphere makes it a desirable location for those seeking both luxury and seclusion.”
The .9-acre property also comes with a spacious swimming pool and private backyard terrace.
Boyenga calls the home a “living piece of art”—a midcentury-modern showpiece.
“Representing it is not just about a sale,” he says. “It’s about stewarding a piece of architectural history.”
