It’s showtime for a drive-in movie theater in Skowhegan, ME. The nostalgic but updated screening venue is available for $439,000, and it’s ready for its close-up.

The 11-acre property, operating as Skowhegan Drive-In Theatre, features both a drive-in movie setup and concession stand. While the facility is still going strong as a drive-in, the acreage presents some options for the next owner.

“It could be sub-dividable,” says listing agent Mark Michaud, of Rizzo Mattson Realtors. “It’s located right on a major thoroughfare and gets a lot of traffic. It is zoned for general commercial.”

He adds that any new business ideas for the land would need to be approved.

Michaud says there has been quite a bit of interest already in the property.

“Most people want to keep it as a movie theater, but the 11 acres are prime real estate,” he notes. “We would love to see it continue as a movie theater, but a hardware store, tractor supply, or landscape company could certainly put the acreage to good use.”

The theater was updated with a new furnace, water heater, and fire suppression system in 2013.

And the venue’s screening capabilities got an industry-standard digital upgrade, and the concession stand was renovated, Michaud says.

In addition to projecting first-run movies, “like the ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie,’” the drive-in hosts a weekly flea market on Saturdays, Michaud says.

“It just started up and has been a success so far,” he reports.

With a capacity of 350, the property could work as a performance space for music events and other types of entertainment.

“I assume a developer would know what they want to do with it, and they just need to get the right approvals,” Michaud adds. “I think commercial is the best use for it.”
